There are is so
many horses out there being abused, neglected, and sent to slaughter.
Where did they all come from? Well, let's see... so and so had a stallion
and his neighbor had a mare. The stallion jumped the fence, or maybe the
neighbor even thought that it would be great to have their mare bred. And
so, 11 months later a cute little colt is born. He's cute for the time
being, but after 11 more months he's getting quite frisky with his mom.
His owners do not have the money to spend on getting him
gelded and the cycle repeats itself over and over again. Today we are
seeing an overpopulation of horses and these horses are the ones suffering as
they are sent to slaughter by the thousands. There is a solution:
educating horse owners and gelding stallions.
Stallions are very
dangerous to other horses, humans and even themselves. In some countries they
fight stallions as can be seen by
clicking here.
On average, gelding a
stallion costs his owner $250 - $500. Because so many owners cannot afford
to geld them many stallions go ungelded and this contributes to the large number
of unwanted horses. Our vet is keeping costs as low as she can for our
gelding program. This, along with your donations, allows us to offer
gelding for a stallion trained to lead and tie at the reduced rate of $25-$75
depending on the age of the horse. Your donations will cover the remaining
$125 per gelding.
Owners of stallions that are wild or cryptorchid will still be able
to receive $125 off the cost for the gelding and will need to talk to our vet
about the cost of their individual horse.
We are working hard to help horses in need. We are tired of seeing
stallion after stallion at auctions and then going to slaughter simply because
their owner never had them gelded. Many of the stallions needing to be
rescued would never have been in that situation if they had been gelded when
they where young. It is time to provide the means to allow those that
otherwise would be unable to geld their stallion to have this necessary surgery
performed.
Our goal is to raise
enough money to geld 40 stallions in Northern California. The program
will start the beginning of November. Instead of having a clinic where
many stallions are gelded on one day, we will be issuing low-cost gelding
certificates to stallion owners to be redeemed whenever they and our vet make
the arrangements. We hope to receive enough support that we would be able
to help geld horses across the nation by offering up to $125 towards a gelding
with an invoice and documentation submitted by a licensed vet.
