1-15-2007 ~ Vol. 3, Issue 1

Dear NorCal Equine Rescue Friends,

We have been very busy caring for equines and working hard to get the new ranch up and going! Bomber, Lassen and Beth came back to us last month as their owner got cancer and sadly was no longer able to care for them. The morning after New Years our staff woke up to find a thin horse on their lawn! Someone must have opened the gate and dropped him off that night...

New Equines Are Available

Bombers Express is a 12 year old, 16.2 hand, black, Standardbred, gelding, NER # 233. Bomber is a very sweet guy that loves to be loved on. In March 2002 he came from the race track (Cal Expo - harness racing) by a very loving couple. They never rode him, but were told that he was ridden occasionally at the track. We have ridden him on some trail rides and he did very well. He thinks about new things and reacts calmly.  He is VERY friendly, curious, gentle and just all-round a big love.

Adoption Fee: $500.00 - Status: Available

Lassen is a 16 year old, 15 hand, Quarter Horse, mare, NER # 234.
She is very sweet in spite of what someone has done to her. She has been abused at some point in her life. Her tongue has a scar going all the way across and most of the way through. She has what the vets refer to as "metabolic syndrome" She takes a thyroid supplement on a daily basis. She also lactates although she hasn't had a foal in at least 5 years. We have ridden her and she did very well, even though she has not been ridden for several years.

Adoption Fee: $500.00 - Status: Available For Adoption

Nibbles is 2 years old, about 14 hand, Quarter Horse, gelding, NER # 263.  The morning after New Years our staff woke up to find this guy on their lawn! Someone must have backed up to our gate and let him out. His hooves are long and he is underweight. Whoever had him really didn't care for him at all. He does know how to lead and will follow you anywhere for a flake of hay. He doesn't know that carrots, apples or grain is good to eat yet, but he will surely learn!
   Adoption Fee: $300.00 -
Status: Available For Adoption
Roger is a 20 year old, 14.1 hands, Tennessee Walker, gelding, NER # 264. Roger is a very sweet guy that was rescued from a horse trader back in September by a concerned person. Roger was starving to death as he has really no back teeth and is not able to eat hay. The person who rescued him fed him soft foods and he began gaining  weight. The person was unable to keep him and donated him to us so we can find him the perfect home. He is a kids friendly horse and is well trained to ride. Adoption Fee: $300.00 - Status: Available For Adoption
Freckles, Madeline and Murphy. These horse where donated to us, they have been well loved and cared for. Sadly their owner could not keep them any more. The elderly lady owned Freckles for 12 years, Madeline was born on her property, and Murphy she owned for 5 years.  Their owner was not able to ride them, but would spend her time just loving and grooming them. Her family members would occasionally ride them. But really they were just her pets and got lots of her love and care.
Murphy is a 8 year old, about 14.1 hands, Quarter Horse cross, gelding, NER # 265. Murphy is a sweet guy that is shy of new people and enjoys running in our new 4 acre pasture. We have not had the time to work with him yet, but we will as soon as we can. He seems like a sweet guy, that wants to pleases, and is easy to catch. He is really beautiful and will probably need some refreshing when it's time to go riding. With a little work he should be a great horse for someone.

Status: Available For Adoption
Freckles is a 20 year old, about 14.3 hands, Arabian, mare, NER # 266.  Freckles is a very sweet well mannered girl that is really beautiful. She is underweight, but should gain it back fine, she just needs to be in a pen by herself. We have not had the time to work with her, we will as soon as we can. We do know that she is easy to catch, lead, load into a trailer, and was ridden more the Murphy. She will probably also need some refreshing when it's time to go riding.  She really is a good horse that will bring a lot of love to someone lucky.
   Adoption Fee: $200.00 -
Status: Available For Adoption

Madeline "Maddi" is a 5 year old, about 14 hands, Thoroughbred cross, NER # 268.  Maddi is really sweet and has been loved and babied all of her life. She is really really cute and loves to be messed with. She is trained to lead and that is about it. This is the first time she has left the place where she was born and everything is new. She is doing very well with all the changes and is calm with it all. She will need to be trained to ride and then she will be the perfect little horse. Please give her a chance and you will not be disappointed. The only reason she is not trained already is she was a pet just to love on.
Adoption Fee: $400.00 - Status: Available For Adoption

Slewcie is a 13 year old, 16 hand, Thoroughbred, mare, NER # 269.
Slewcie is a very sweet horse that really loves to give you a real horsy hug! She is trained to ride and we were told that she would be good for an intermediate rider. We have not had the time to work with her yet, but we will as soon as we can. She would be good for occasionally ridding as she tends to go lame from time to time, and no one knows why. She may have some reproductive issues, we were told that she seems to be in heat to much. She is all so sweet, please give her a chance.  Adoption Fee: $300.00 - Status: Available

Still Waiting For A Homes

Katie is an 35+ year old, 16 hand, Thoroughbred / Quarter Horse, Mare, NER # 254.  Katie was donated because her owners were no longer willing to care for her.
She is a sweet, friendly girl who needs a caring home.  She is blind in her right eye, but can still get around good.
She is supposedly trained to ride, but due to her age she shouldn't be ridden other than perhaps letting a small child be led around once she is back up to weight.  Katie is underweight, and with such an elderly horse, the road to recovery is long.

 Adoption Fee:
Free - Status: Available
  Concho is a 4 yr old, 13.1 hand, Arabian/Paint, gelding, NER # 258.
Concho is a great, young gelding. He has wonderful ground manners and is very green broke to ride. He is spooky when you first mount him and did buck our trainer off once. He is a great project horse and will make a magnificent horse with proper training and love. He seems as if someone spent a lot time working with him on ground manners and then someone else just tried to get him riding ASAP so they could get more money at the auction. He is a really sweet horse that just needs some TLC. Won't you consider giving Concho a home?
Adoption Fee:$500.00 - Reduced!  Status: Available

Rehabs

Charlie Boy is an 8 yr old, TB, gelding, NER #247. Charlie was brought to us very emaciated with a body score of 1-.  Charlie is amazing us beyond belief.  In the short time we have been blessed with his visit, he has gained almost 600 lbs since October! Charlie recently developed Strangles and will be in recovery until he completely recovers and then he will be available for adoption.   You must see more pictures of Charlie - Click Here. Status: Quarantined
Beth is a 14 year old, 14.3 hand, Morgan/Quarter Horse, mare, NER # 240. Beth is a sweet horse but is a little mischievous and a little testing too. We have ridden her in the round pen and she did ok but needs some work. She saddles and bridles like an old pro. She just needs some more training. She recently developed Strangles and will be in recovery until she completely recovers.  She's a very curious girl and wants to be with someone all the time.  She is really pretty, frisky and lively.
   Status: Quarantined
Whiley is a 12 yr old, 16 hand, Appaloosa, gelding, NER # 241. Whiley is a sweet guy that is easy to work with. He is trained to ride and does good on the trail. He doesn't like to leave other horses behind to much, but with some encouragement he does ok. He has been just sitting around for awhile and needs some time out riding. A year ago or so Whiley was used in a dude string and got pretty thin. He is a good boy that just needs a home were he can be loved and ridden. He developed Strangles and will be in recovery until he completely recovers.
 Status: Quarantined / Adoption Pending

The Ranch

The Ranch is being tamed. There is now a 4 acre pasture pen, a pad for a 200' x 120' arena, a round pen pad, drive way and pads for a hay barn, mare motel, tack room and office. The horses just love the new pen, they enjoy running around with the wind in their manes. Most of the horses are at the ranch now. Our staff have been working hard 10 to 14 hours a day to help get this ranch going. We plan on being out there full time end of February.  There are so many things that need to be done it is a little overwhelming, but we will get it done.
John Bunch Dozer Service gave us a really good deal and has donated a lot of his service and time for which we are very grateful. John has defiantly gone the extra mile to make sure the job is being done right. The tractor work started on the second of this month and was done on Friday. The place looks different now, it really looks good.  It is so exciting to really have a long term
facility for NER to call home at last. Many thanks for all your donation! Without you this would be impossible - Thank You!

News

The Claire Giannini Fund awarded NER a $5000.00 grant last month! Thanks to the grant we were able to purchase a 4 stall mare motel and an equine scale. For so long we have wanted a mare motel to place our newly rescued equines until they get used to our ranch and are able to be turned out into pasture, for pregnant mares, mares with foals, and for injured equines to have a safe place to recover in.  The scale will be a wonderful addition so we will be able to carefully document equines recovery to full health, and to insure the equine is not gaining weight to rapidly or losing weight. This grant could not have come at a better time as these are valuable addition to our new facilities. We want to thank Sierra Barns and Corrals at www.SierraBarns.com for helping give us such a wonderful deal on our new 4 stall mare motel!

With your help, we were able to rescue 69 equines in 2006! We are very happy that we were able to save 69 equines from a life of unsure future. Our goal was 75 equines for 2006, as we were unable to meet our goal last year, the goal will stay the same this year. We have already had 6 equine come into our rescue this year! The way this seems to be so far we should meet our goal.
Since we started rescuing equines in 2003 we have been able rescue 166 equines and 2 pigs! Every year our rescue numbers go up higher and higher. In 2003, 5 were saved - 2004, 35 were saved - 2005, 51 were saved - 2006, 69 were saved - 2007, 6 already! We are only able to rescue equines when funds allow. With getting the ranch up and going, fund are really being stretched thin - Your donation would be greatly appreciated, every dollar really does help.

We have a new board member, Joshua Orozco has joined us to help fight for those who have no voice. Josh is 26 years old, married, has 2 children, he is a very dedicated, hard working, horse loving individual and he will make a valuable addition to the board. Josh's email address is josh@savethehorse.com
