10-24-2006 ~ Vol. 2, Issue 22

Dear NorCal Equine Rescue Friends,

We had the pleasure of assisting Horses Honor Horse Rescue (HHHR) this month, they donated 3 horses to us so that we could find them suitable homes. We have had a large number of special needs horses come in this month, and have had 9 horses visiting the vet for various reasons this month, along with feed and transport costs, and are in dire needs of donations to help support our budget this month.  Please consider making a donation to show your support of saving horse in need.

In This Issue:

  • Our Equines - We have 9 equines for adoption and Sunny has been move into available for adoption status!

  • Rehabs - We have a new horse in rehab, Charlie Boy, a very emaciated horse.

  • News - We don't have to move our facility ASAP and we have a new NER video to share with you.

Our Equines

Sunny is an 8 year old, 15.3 hand, Arabian, gelding. NER # 236. Sunny was severely underweight when he arrived on July 31st.  He weighed only 700 lbs on arrival, and we are pleased to announce that he has  gained 250 lbs and been given a clean bill of health by our vet and is ready to join some lucky family.  He is almost up to his goal weight. He has been evaluated under saddle and would be great for an intermediate rider and is a good trail horse. It is so wonderful to see him has a beautiful horse once again and it gives us joy to have seen him go for just bones to beauty. Click Here - To see his before and after pictures.

 Adoption Fee: $700

Mel's Best is a 12 year old, 16.1 hand, Standardbred, stallion (he has an appointment to be gelded this week,) NER # 237. He was harness racing and winning only a few months ago. But younger faster horses were coming to his stable and he had already won 66 races and $500,000 so it was time for him to move on and give his stall to another. We picked him up at the Cal Expo and had a wonderful time watching him trot around the track, you could see it in his eyes, he loved it! But those glory days are now behind him. He is sound and is a good riding horse, he was adopted, but unfortunately for financial reasons the adoption did not go through.  Please consider giving Mel a new forever home to call his own. Adoption Fee: $500

Sheza QT Pep Chex "Sheza"  is a 18 year old, 14.3 hand, Quarter Horse, mare, NER # 243. Her first owner had her 11 years and used her for bulldogging in rodeos. 4 years ago she was sold and then for the past 3 years she was used as a broodmare, but she miscarried every time. They were unable to keep her and gave her away to a nice man, who needed her for his grandson, but turned out to be a money hungry liar. He took his fat horse to an auction where we paid the $$$ to save her from the killer buyers. Please if you can't keep your horse don't give it away to strangers!  Adoption Fee: $600

Pepper is a 2 year old, 13 hands, Quarter Horse, colt (he has an appointment to be gelded this week,) NER # 248. Pepper was born in Canada at a PMU farm. He left his mom at only 4 months old and was shipped to California.   He has great potential and is healthy and very intelligent. He was totally untrained on arrival, and we have volunteers working with him and he has come a long way.  He is learning to be haltered, leading, and tying but definitely needs a lot more time and work. This horse has beautiful markings and will make someone a great horse. He is a cute little guy the will make a youth horse project. If you have the time to put into this sweet little guy, he will not disappoint you. He has not been abused. He was donated to us, as his owner is moving and can not take him with her. She had him since he was 4 months old. Adoption Fee: $300

Rocky is a 6 yr old mustang, gelding, approximately 16 hand and NER # 249. He born in captivity, he was purchased as 1 ˝ yrs old and spent the next 3 yrs in a 12x12 stall which led to him being deemed a problem horse.  He was “rescued” by a neighbor that proceeded to put him in with his 7 mares. After he sired 7 foals, he was then placed with HHHR and was adopted to a friend that put him into basic kindergarten schooling.   Then he was then placed into a home with a massage therapist who spent hundreds of hours playing, massaging and working with him, but lacked the confidence to attempt to continue his saddle training.  He is sound and has hundreds of hours of basic training.  He was returned to HHHR due to a death in the family.  HHHR donated him to us so that we could find him a suitable home. Adoption Fee:$400
Casper is a  QH, gelding, approximately 17 years old, 15 hand, NER # 250.  His teeth were floated in May 2006. He has received a vet evaluation for his eye, and the vet determined that there is no pain or discomfort from the eye, so there is no reason to remove it.  It is an old injury that he has learned to compensate for, and is a very good riding horse.  He is a great horse that is looking for a home that will over look his eye and see his potential.  His former owner turned him over because he failed to pay horse boarding fees and the barn owner said if he couldn’t pay he had to give the horse up.  He agreed to donate him as a compromise and HHHR donated him to us so that we could find him a suitable home.

Adoption Fee: $400
Carrie is a TB, mare, 3-4 years old, approximately 16 hands, NER #251. Carrie was in training for the race track and then bowed her tendon and then became a race track reject, before she ever had her first race. Carrie has been at HHHR since January 2005. She has an injury on her back leg from barb wire fencing in October 2005. She has had a vet  check and she vetted out fine, with no signs of lameness. She is very friendly, loves attention and loves people and is a real sweetie. HHHR donated her to us so that we could find her a suitable home. She needs some training for riding, since all she was trained to do was run and stop. With a little work she is going to make a wonderful riding horse and you would be hard put to find a horse sweeter then she is.  Adoption Fee: $400

Jessie is our 150th equine since we started rescuing equines in 2003!

Jessie is a 27 year old, 14.3 hand, Mustang, gelding, NER # 252.
Jessie is a very sweet old guy that has been working at a dude ranch.  He was use for beginner rides and was great at his job. He has had a hard life and we are looking for a home he can be a baby sitter and loved on. He is healthy and enjoying his life, but he needs to start taking it easier in his old age.
Jessie didn't have his BLM paper work when he came to us, but NER's trainer read his brand and BLM was able to confirm the reading and is sending us his paper work.
If you a place in your heart for this old guy and could give him a loving home, please do so.
 Adoption Fee: Free

Dottie is a 2 year old, 28 inches, Achondroplastic Miniature Dwarf, mare, NER 253.  She is a very special girl that is looking for a very special home.  She has a great personality and would make a great companion.  She is serviceably sound; she needs to have regular vet and Farrier care to keep her comfortable for the long term. She has never been abused or neglected but due to health problems her owner was forced to find a new home for her.  She will have special needs for the rest of her life and is extremely cow hocked and toes out in the front. She shows no sign of lameness in spite of her appearance. Adoption Fee: $1200

Rehabs

Charlie Boy is an 8 yr old, TB, gelding, NER #247. Charlie was brought to us very emaciated with a body score of 1-.  He was in very serious condition and we were very concerned about his future.  He was evaluated by a vet, blood work done, teeth power floated, and given a general physical, and it was determined that he was suffering with anemia and also needed major dental work done.  He is currently in our rehab program, and is in need of sponsors to help with his care.  He is a young, special horse that deserves a chance to recover to living a happy, healthy life. Visit our Charlie web page to see the progress he has made with us so far, the change is amazing for the sort time he has been with us. To see more pictures of Charlie - Click Here. Status: Rehabilitation
Cowboy is a 9 year old, 15 hand, Kiger Mule, gelding, NER # 226. Cowboy has successfully been weaned off bute and is doing well. The following update is strait from his foster Mom. "On your calendar put a big gold star on 9/30 next to Cowboys name. Yesterday was big trim #1 for us and he was super.  All my ground work, walking, picking up his feet "just cause", petting, brushing  and patience paid off.  I used the hoof jack and grinder with not one problem from him. I really did cry because he no longer had fear and let me work on his sore feet.  I was so overjoyed.  We have a long way to go to reach a proper hoof confirmation but the "trusting" factor was the biggest hurdle we had to overcome in order to make progress.  Now, it will just be time."  A very big thank you to his foster family for all the time and love they are putting into his care. Status: Rehabilitation

News

Norcal Equine Rescue has many announcements to make this month.  A few days after our last edition of E-News we received a phone call from our current landlord that they had decided not to sell the property.  We are very grateful to be able to have this facility at least through the winter.  We are actively looking for a permanent home for our rescue, our staff are going out with our agent and working on getting a pre approval for the property, and we hope to have good news soon.

We have also made a new NER video to share with our supporters and sponsors in the hopes of raising more monthly support to help with a steady income.  We are asking that you pass the information on to barns, tack shops, or any business that might be willing to help.  You can see the movie on our website or we have also posted it to YouTube and it can be watched by Clicking Here.  We have been very blessed with your support,  we will continue to do everything we can to improve the lives of the equines with your help.  We have many horses in and our budget is very thin this month, many of our horses have special needs or vet costs that we desperately need your help with.  Can you afford to give a little this month?  Even $10 helps tremendously.  With your help we can make a difference
.

Thank you for supporting our rescue efforts!
